Here's what I saw at work tonight

There were 2 kids around 5 years old, a brother and a sister. The brother was picking his nose and turned around and wiped it on his sister. Then he went on his merry way, picking away some more. His sister continued to sip her "juice" and didn't even notice what her brother had done.

I miss having someone to brush my hair

When I was growing up there was always someone who wanted to brush my long, blonde hair. My mom loved to brush it and so did my friends. There are few things in the world so calming as someone taking the time to brush your hair for you.

When I was married my husband loved to brush it. In fact, he loved to wash it and dry it as well. He would do it until he was satisfied and I have to say it would look perfect when he finished with it.

On the other hand, nothing infuriates me more than someone pulling my hair. This comes from the days of playing chase and football in the backyard. My sister and I both had hair to our butts. When we would run really fast it would stream in the wind behind us. The best way to catch us was to grab our hair and basically clothesline our asses. So, we teamed up (something my sister and I rarely did) and refused to play if everyone didn't agree not to pull our hair - ever. It worked because they needed us to make the teams complete.

I will still hurt someone for pulling my hair to this day.

Another on my ex-husband's unsual talents is that he could tie the prettiest bows. It didn't matter if it was on a present or on one of my outfits he could tie a perfect bow everytime.

He also prided himself on his ability to unhook my bra in about 1 second with one hand - just like Fonzie!

Why It Matters?

Many people feel that steroid use among ball players is a non story but it matters and I'll tell you why I think so. During the Mark McGuire era when he was breaking Hank Aaron's homerun record, I was working in a local pharmacy/herb store. Mark McGuire was taking a product called Androstendione.

Androstendione is legal to take. What it does is provide the body with the precursors to testosterone which enable the body to manufacture even more testosterone on it's own.

At the height of it's popularity (when he was in the process of breaking the record), we had men coming in the store in droves to buy Androstendione. We couldn't keep it on the shelf even though it was around $50 a bottle and this was over 10 years ago. I didn't have a problem with all these men buying the stuff but what there was a problem with was the teenage boys who were coming in to buy the stuff.

Thankfully I worked with a pharmacist with a conscience and he refused to sell it to anyone under the age of 18. Here is why. Teenage boys already have an overabundance of testosterone in their bodies. When they take the Androstendione, then their bodies produce even more testosterone. When there is too much testosterone then the body starts to produce more estrogen to counteract it. This can cause developmental problems in growing boys. (I got my information from the pharmacist and from my own personal research.)

High school coaches and parents whose only thought is the next high school game were actually sending their players into the store to buy the stuff. My boss made me card them to see if they were in fact of legal age to buy the stuff even though there was no law against it. It said it was "a matter of ethics." Many time parents would come in and complain when we refused to sell it to their budding athletes. Once they would speak to the pharmacist (and he was happy to counsel anyone who asked) I only saw one parent go ahead and buy it for their child.

A high school ballgame is not something to risk a teenage boy's development over. I have seen it many times not only in relation to Androstendione but having players play with an injury. Sure they may have to sit out a game or two or even a season but they will be better off in the long run for it.

I have watched players play on injuries that if I would have raced a greyhound that way I would have lost my license. Not to mention that it generally shortens a career to do anything with an injury instead of letting it heal.

Maybe we should give our kids the same consideration that we give our dogs.

Pull My Finger

My mom used to spray my dad with Lysol when he let one rip!

Did Everybody's Dad Play the Money Game?

You know the one... your dad pulls the money out of his pocket and tells you to guess and if you get it right you get to keep it.

One time my dad pulled a fat wad of bills out of his pocket and told me to guess how much money it was and and I could have it. I was around 7 at the time. I guessed $863.00.

I was right.

Then he reached in his pocket and pulled out his change!

"WRONG!" He declared with a huge smile on his face.

I am the queen of front one

I was carding a kid last night for cigarettes and he actually looked at me and said, "I don't need ID, I am the king!"

My reply was, "well king, you're dealing with the queen! Now whip out that ID!"

He laughed and promptly produced it with no problem. At least there was a little humor in the transaction.

When you hear a customer's music blaring from their car stereo before they even come in the store, it is a guaranteed blunt sale.

customer: I'll have a single.

cashier: We don't have marrieds, however we do sell family packs!

(for those of you who don't know, a blunt cigar is referred to as a single)

customer: Do you sell blunt wraps?

cashier: No, our blunts don't get cold!

Unfortunately we now sell blunt wraps so I can't use that line anymore.

customer: I'll take 2 marlboro in a box.

cashier: do you want me to take the other 18 out?

For those of you who don't know there are 20 cigarettes in a pack.

This freaks them out everytime I do this: A customer hands me a $50 and asks, "can you break this?"

"Yes," I say, and then I rip it in half!

Most of them kind of choke on the spot. I just tape it up and give them their change.

Dumb customer questions: When you get the Sunday Paper?

Smart cashier answer: "uhh, Sunday."

Dumbest customer question ever: Where does your milk come from?

The only correct answer: "a cow."

Rollin' in the Dough

One time somebody paid my dad for a car with 2000 brand new one dollar bills.
He brought them home because he wanted them messed up so he could count them.
He hollered for me, Billy and Rhonda and when we walked into the bedroom he threw them all in the air and told us to have fun.
We had a first class money wrestling match!
We were literally rollin' in the dough that day.
